Correct way to lift heavy furniture

How to lift heavy furniture?

If possible, always ask someone to help you and use a dolly or a hand truck:

how to move heavy furniture

A hand truck or a square moving dolly could be good options depending on the type of furniture you’re moving. A hand truck (see pic above) is a piece of metal moving equipment that stands upright with wheels on the bottom. The handle is at the top and a platform to hold the furniture is at the bottom by the wheels. A moving dolly is a small square platform with four wheels.

  • Be very careful with hand trucks. If you try to move a piece of furniture that is too large it could fall and crush you. Your strength will be keeping the furniture upright.
  • Use a hand truck to move furniture by wheeling the platform under the piece of furniture you’re trying to move. A hand truck will work better for smaller bookcases, tables, heavy boxes and dressers. Lean the furniture against the hand truck and tilt the handle toward you. The furniture will lean with the hand truck and you’ll be able to wheel it around. This is much easier than pushing it.
  • Moving dollys are easier to use. All you need to do is place the furniture on top of them and then you’ll be able to use the dolly’s wheels to push it around. Make sure you find a dolly that is large enough for the piece of furniture you plan to move.
  • Having a friend to help you pick up the furniture would make the process of getting it on/off the dolly easier.

If you don’t have one and you must use your super strong muscles to move it, then follow these guidelines:

Never attempt to lift by bending forward. Bend your hips and knees to squat down to your load, keep it close to your body, and straighten your legs to lift. Never lift heavy furniture or objects above shoulder level. Avoid turning or twisting your body while lifting or holding a heavy object.

What should you avoid when lifting a heavy load?

Lifting and carrying are power jobs. When you lift and carry the wrong way, you can damage your back or end up with an injury. To avoid such incidents, here are some useful tips on how to properly lift and carry safely:
*Always use your stomach as a low back support by pulling it in during lifting.

*Check the load you plan to carry to make sure it is distributed evenly and doesn’t have sharp or protruding objects. Check the path you are walking to make sure it is clear of objects that could make you trip or fall.
*Do not try to carry a big load alone, always ask for help. Work as a team by lifting, walking and lowering the load together. Let one person call the shots and direct the lift.
*Keep the load close to the body for as long as possible while lifting. Keep the heaviest side of the load next to the body. If a close approach to the load is not possible, try to slide it towards the body before attempting to lift it. Avoid twisting the back or leaning sideways, especially while the back is bent.
